Shiba Inu
The Shiba Inu is an ancient breed, dating back to around 300 B.C. The name ‘Shiba’ is derived from the breed’s hunting history in the rugged Japanese mountains; it can mean ‘brushwood’ (either referring to the mountain brush or the dog’s reddish coat) in Japanese, while ‘Inu’ simply means ‘dog.’ After nearly becoming extinct by the end of World War II, the Shiba Inu managed to survive Japan’s wartime hardships and has since become the nation’s most popular companion dog. Known for their agility and sharp senses, Shibas make excellent companions and watchful guardians. Their bodies are compact and muscular, with a well-balanced build.
Shikoku
The Shikoku is one of the rarest and most ancient of Japan’s native dog breeds, often described as wolf-like in appearance. According to legend, the breed may have some wolf ancestry. Historically, Shikokus lived alongside Matagi, or hunters, in the rugged, remote regions of western and northern Shikoku. These areas, characterized by steep mountains and difficult-to-reach terrain, prevented much interbreeding with dogs from other regions, leading to the development of distinct bloodlines within the breed. As a result, the Shikoku has remained remarkably pure. Its well-preserved bloodlines, which can be traced back through many generations, were one of the reasons why the Nippo organization used the Shikoku as the foundation for its breed standard for all Japanese breeds.
